The Year is almost over

Ok, this became a much longer blogg than I intended and I do definitely not expect you all to read it so just ignore it and take it for the new years ramble it was meant to be.
Wishing you all a very happy new year!

And it has been a wonderful year. Just before Christmas I got to see my cousin Huginn Heiðar for the first time and it was great. I have been following his progess for months. The wee guy had to have a liver-transplant very early on in his young life and he has been patiently trying to get well. It was great to get to touch the soft little guy to see how warm and alive he is, his eyes following us everywhere and the toy we gave him greatly interested him as it made all sorts of funny noises.
My own wee niece has been a great source of fun comments and antics. The only way a four year old could be. Precious moments to be cherished indeed.
I have also spent a number to moments with my dear friends during the year, chatting and playing board-games (that are suspiciously addictive) but now near the end of the year, it was more marked by meeting of friends that have not had the opportunity to see each other for a long time.
My friend Guðbjört, who I have not seen since the beginning of January, came home from India in November. My friend Guðný Stella, went to South-America just after easter, so I haven't seen her all summer, she came home in November as well, so I was very happy to see her again.
But my friends Hrafnhildur and Guðmundur who I left home alone for the months I was away in Glasgow were very glad to see me again, and we have been spending every moment we get to play our addictive board-games.
We like board-games and they seem to like us as well, since they have started producing games that are sooo addictive to us, and on top of that also issuing additions to the games.
We have Catan (the Island) with the Seafarers addition and now Cities and Merchants. We also have Carcassone, which is sort of like an island, but not, and we have the Pubs and Churches addition and now Merchants as well. Both these board-games are addictive because, I think, they are forever changing, the board you play the game on is never the same so you never ever play the same game twice, and that way you never get bored.
This year has also been great in that mom is gradually always getting better and better, although on busy days it can become too much for her.
We all agree that we had a very nice Christmas here at home, and everyone was excited and happy about their presents. I got soo many that I thought someone had made a mistake, because I had not expected this. But the presents seemed to pour in from all over the world. I got loads of games, and even dvd's and cd's that I didn't own, imagine that! I even got a book, and you know how there can't be Christmas if you don't recieve a good book. I got Andlit norðursins (or Faces of the North) by Ragnar Axelsson a very gifted Icelandic photographer, from my brother, I was very pleased with it. I got wonderful martini glasses from my friends Hröbbu and Gumma and a bread-maker from mom and dad along with a coat. I recieved a wonderful blouse from my grandmother and a shawl she had crocheted for me (even though her eyes are failing her) I will cherish it always. I also got a pretty Swarowski crystal cross necklace from my mother. Two brooches from my friends Guðný Stellu and Claire. And the most wonderful sari costumes and shawl and necklace and Indian dolls from my friends Margréti and Guðbjörtu. I could go on and on. Thank you for everything and I love you all guys.

Gleðileg jól

Merry Christmas.
Oh, boy, this has truly been a very busy time, but wonderful. I have managed to do a lot of things that I wasn't even sure I would be able to finish. But then Christmas Eve (day) came and everything slid into place.
Last night mom and I were busy wrapping up all the Christmas presents, and we didn't even finish until 3 am in the morning. I went to sleep shortly before 4 am but woke up to begin the new day of last minute tidying up before Christmas eve begins.
This year, only Grandma will be joining us, so it's only going to be the four of us. Which is nice. The food is cooking in the oven and on the stove and the smell is wonderful.
I still have not managed to get all the Christmas presents out, but that's ok, some of the presents have been waiting for more than a few months to reach their owner, because I still I haven't been able to see my wayward doctor friend, recently arrived in the country again from South America, and she has a birthday/Christmas present waiting for her.
The Christmas tree is up and gleaming with wonderful decorations and presents adorning is base. The advent lights around the appartment light up the dark midday and give a wonderful festive glow to everything around.
Oh, I just love this time of year. When you are able to sit down and get completely absorbed in the excitement, the anticipation, the STRESS and incredible calmness that descends on you at this moment on Christmas Eve you sort of feel like everything you went through to be able to bring the small joy of presents to your friends and family that everything was worth it. Bruised heels from drivers with carts going nuts around the bends in the tiny isles of the supermarket, sore toes from everyone trying to get past you, no matter that you are not a part of the shops decor and you sore head from all the crazy shoutings and arguing over who is going to buy what for whom and who is not.
Well, I just wish you all a very merry Christmas Eve and hope the rest of the holiday season will bring you all that you wish for.

Gleðileg jól og farsælt komandi ár

The Yuletide lads - part 15 - The END

On Christmas night itself
- so a wise man writes
- the lads were all restraint
and just stared at the lights.

Then one by one they trotted off
into the frost and snow.
On Twelfth Night the last
of the lads used to go.

Their footprints in the highlands
are effaced now for long,
the memories have all turned
to image and song

The Yuletide lads - part 14

Candle beggar
( Kertasníkir )

The thirteenth was Candle Beggar
- ´twas cold, I believe,
if he was not the last
of the lot on Christmas Eve.

He trailed after the little ones
who, like happy sprites,
ran about the farm with
their fine tallow lights.

The Yuletide lads - part 13

Meat Hook
( Kjötkrækir )

Meat Hook, the twelfth one,
his talent would display
as soon as he arrived
on Saint Thorlak´s Day.

He snagged himself a morsel
of meat of any sort,
although his hook at times was
a tiny bit short.

The Yuletide lads - part 12

Door Sniffer
( Gáttaþefur )

Eleventh was Door Sniffer,
a doltish lad and gross.
He never got a cold, yet had
a huge, sensitive nose.

He caught the scent of lace bread
while leagues away still
and ran toward it weightless
as wind over dale and hill.

The Yuletide lads - part 11

Window Peeper
( Gluggagæjir )

The tenth was Window Peeper,
a weird little twit,
who stepped up to the window
and stole a peek through it.

And whatever was inside
to which his eye was drawn,
he most likely attempted
to take later on.

The Yuletide lads - part 10

Sausage Swiper
( Bjúgna krækir )

The ninth was Sausage Swiper,
a shifty pilferer.
He climbed up to the rafters
and raided food from there.

Sitting on a crossbeam
in soot and in smoke,
he fed himself on sausage
fit for gentlefolk.

The Yuletide lads - part 9

Skyr Gobbler
( Skyr gámur)

Skyr* Gobbler, the eighth,
was an awful stupid bloke.
He lambasted the skyr tub
till the lid on it broke.

Then he stood there gobbling
- his greed was well known -
until, about to burst,
he would bleat, howl and groan.

The Yuletide lads - part 8

Door Slammer
( Hurðaskellir )

The seventh was Door Slammer,
a sorry, vulgar chap:
When people in the twilight
would take a little nap,
he was happy as a lark
with the havoc he could wreak,
slamming doors and hearing
the hinges on them sqeak

The Yuletide lads - part 7

Bowl Licker
( Askasleikir )

Bowl Licker, the sixth one,
was shockingly ill bred.
From underneath the bedsteads
he stuck his ugly head.

And when the bowls were left
to be licked by dog or cat,
he snatched them for himself
- he was sure good at that!

The Yuletide lads - part 6

Pot Scraper
( Pottasleikir )

Pot Scraper, the fifth one,
was a funny sort of chap.
When kids were given scrapings,
he´d come to the door and tap.

And they would rush to see
if there really was a guest.
Then he hurried to the pot
and had a scrapingfest.

The Yuletide lads - part 5

Spoon Licker
( Þvörusleikir )

The fourth was Spoon Licker;
like spindle he was thin.
He felt himself in clover
when the cook wasn´t in.

Then stepping up, he grappled
the stirring spoon with glee,
holding it with both hands
for it was slippery.

The Yuletide lads - part 4

Stubby
( Stúfur )

Stubby was the third called,
a stunted little man,
who watched for every chance
to whisk off a pan.

And scurrying away with it,
he scraped off the bits
that stuck to the bottom
and brims - his favorites.

The Yuletide lads - part 3

Gully Gawk
( Giljagaur )

The second was Gully Gawk,
gray his head and mien.
He snuck into the cow barn
from his craggy ravine.

Hiding in the stalls,
he would steal the milk,
while the milkmaid gave the cowherd
a meaningful smile.

The Yuletide Lads - part 2

Tonight the first Yuletide lad comes to town.
Sheep Cote-Clod
( Stekkjastaur )

The first of them was Sheep-Cote Clod.
He came stiff as wood,
to pray upon the farmer´s sheep
as far as he could.

He wished to suck the ewes,
but it was no accident
he couldn´t; he had stiff knees
- not to convenient.

The Yuletide lads - part 1

Let me tell the story
of the lads of few charms,
who once upon a time
used to visit our farms.

They came from the mountains,
as many of you know,
in a long single file
to the farmsteads below.

Grýla was their mother
- she gave them ogre milk -
and the father Leppalúdi;
a loathsome ilk.

They were called the Yuletide lads
- at Yuletide they were due -
and always came one by one,
not ever two by two.

Thirteen altogether,
these gents in their prime
didn´t want to irk people
all at one time.

Creeping up, all stealth,
they unlocked the door.
The kitchen and the pantry
they came looking for.

They hid where they could,
with a cunning look or sneer,
ready with their pranks
when people weren´t near.

And even when they were seen,
they weren´t loath to roam
and play their tricks - disturbing
the peace of the home.

The Santa Clause is coming to town

Yes, tomorrow there are 13 days till Christmas and that is when the Icelandic Yuletide lads start heading down from the mountains towards the farmsteads below.
It struck me just the other day that, it is not easy to explain why the Icelandic Santa Clauses are 13 or why they are called so strange names. Understandably, names like Sheep Worrier (or Sheep Cot-Clod), Door Sniffer and Window Peeper might seem more intune with today's perverts than something well yes, perverted in a sense if you really give it a good thought, but it is tradition, and today it's just amusing.
But I decided to give my Scottish friends a treat and put on my website a in 14 installments, a poet by Jóhannes of (/from) Kötlum about the Yuletide lads, because no one gives a better image of these guys than him.
The first one comes tomorrow, so I will start with the beginning of the poet tonight, and for the next 13 days I will add the next bit of the poem so that in the end everyone will know about the Icelandic Yuletide lads.
(I got the translation by Hallberg Hallmundsson online).
Enjoy

Packed and ready to GO HOME!

Wow, this has been an incredible day. I woke up at 8am as usual, but this time I hurried to get dressed and out the door with final laundry before going home tomorrow. When I had finished making the bed with nice clean sheets and stuff it was time to head to Uni. I had three classes today, one straight after another, and then I finished at two. When that happy hour arrived, I flew out the door to meet my friend Árdísi outside the subway station and on we rolled into Buchanan Street Subway station where we lifted off to go to UGC Cinema to see THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA. Ok movie, but dear lord, how long IS it! We managed to get into 2:20pm show but it probably didn't start until half hour later and we didn't get out of the screen room until 5pm. Thankfully the movie stirred a few good memories up from watching the BBC version of the Narnia Chronicles so I was absorbed in the movie and didn't really notice the time pass. But then reality intruded and I had to head home to START pack. Yes, at that time I hadn't even started packing and I am going home tomorrow. Well we got home just before six and I started packing for real. I finished packing quarter to seven. I hurried to tell my friend Árdísi, because she has been quite worried the past few days, that I hadn't even started thinking about packing yet. Then for about an hour and half I was cleaning my room. Now, I am sitting down for the first time in more than two hours and eating my dinner, that I ordered from Chow's. Probably the best Chinese place in Glasgow.
I am completely done in, but I am just soooooo looking forward to going home, I don't mind at all. But oh, dear, there will definitely be excess baggage on the move tomorrow and that does not include me.
Friends and Family ... see you tomorrow. Friend in Glasgow ... see you in the new year!

Day after tomorrow

and I'll be home for Christmas. I am looking soooo much forward to going home I can hardly sit still. I continually burst out in songs, singing a strange mixture of Christmas songs with unflattering shakes of my bod. My advent calander is almost finished, marking how many days are until I go home instead of how many are until Christmas, because when I go home, it will be Christmas for me. I went shopping to day, big surprise there, and finished my christmas shopping. Now it's just rest and relaxation until tomorrow when I start packing and then all hits the fan.
But before all that craziness starts I will be chillin' out in UGC cinema (or I should say CineWorld now) watching Chronicles of Narnia. Yes, envy me! Mwhahahahahah!

The Wild West ... End

This is not copy/paste, but what actually happened to me again today, when I was walking home today through THE GARDEN. That darn squirrel attacked again. I am starting to think, I either have an admirer here or a stalker. I just have this mental picture of him jumping on me and running up and down my body while I do that funky cartoon dance trying to get him off me. Spooky squirrel country.

Showdown in the Park

Glasgow is truly a dangerous place. Today I was almost run over by a squirrel. I was walking through the Botanic Gardens on my way to Uni this morning, when I noticed a tiny squirrel running across the pathway in front of me. At first he ran into the direction of a guy that was walking just ahead of me, and he only stopped like barely two feet in front of the guy. The guy was startled and stopped for a second and then headed on but looked back where the squirrel was still standing watching after him with a strange look I can only guess. Then, I was next, I just kept on going, thinking that the squirrel would run away when I approached him, they usually do that. But nooooo, he ran straight at me. And then he stopped, just like with the guy only like few feet between us and he looked up at me with his teeth bared in a real mean kind of way. I was very thankful that he stopped and didn't run up my skirt, that would not have been funny for anyone other than those watching me. But it was scary, but I just looked down at the little pip-squeak and kept eye-contact with him until I had safely passed him. Showdown in the park at mid-morning. High drama and I escaped with my life intact. Brave girl! Went to school and had a nice day, and am not emotionally scarred by this experience.

Þeir drekka ekki einu sinni allir kaffi. Þeir eru ekki einu sinni allir spakir. Af hverju kallast þeir þá kaffihúsaspekingar? Svarið er einfalt. Speki þeirra minnir oft á kaffi latte. Hún er froðukennd. Kaffihúsaspekingurinn nýtur sín best í góðra vina hópi og stundum segir hann eitthvað gáfulegt - þótt það sé ekki nema bara út af því að hann talar svo mikið.

Hvaða tröll ert þú?

Brrrrr .... cold

When has this happened. I had closed my window, but still allowed a small bit of air to get through, big mistake. I didn't understand why I was still so cold, even though I put my radiator up, when I finally gave up and closed the window completely. I nearly couldn't, because the handles on the window were soo cold I almost didn't want to come near them. Nearly froze! Then I checked my website, where the Glasgow weather is shown and saw that while it was nice and cosy back home in ICELAND with 6°c it was -7°c here in Glasgow. eeeeeks. No wonder I was cold and that is not something you should feel while in your room.
When I went out today, very late, as you might guess from me blogg earlier today, I didn't plan on staying long, basically I just had to buy something for my dinner and some milk, I was just short of two hours in the City Central and then I decided to start home, I went to the taxi line at Central Station because I saw there were no taxis to find at Argyll street. When I came to Central Station there was already a very nice long line there, I waited for about half hour and while there I counted the taxis from when I arrived until I left. I took taxi number 31. It was cold to wait and it took my toes at least an hour to realize they were still alive.

Winter in Scotland

When I woke up yesterday there was frost everywhere, not snow or anything but just very cold. Well, it was more like freezing and it didn't change at all, and it was freezing cold all day yesterday. Not nice when you come out from the cinema at 3am in the morning, on top of that having to wait for a taxi in the bleeding frost. We didn't make it home until nearly 4am and poor Árdís had to got to Uni at 12pm today. But what I noticed yesterday at the Halls, was that they had started spreading salt all over the place. And it was not slippery ice or anything about, just frost, that went away as soon as the sun hit the spot, but they are soooo scared to death of being sued by someone if they possibly might do themselves a bit of harm they put salt all over the place. Amazing, and this means that today when I go out, at all the places the sun shone yesterday are going to have cooked salt which is really not nice to walk in, yeuk. Get a grip Scotland, frost is not going to kill anyone, wait until it gets really slippery and then do something, this is just a waste.
We went to the Debenhams sale yesterday as well, and I did some killer bargain bying, which I am very proud of, there was like 10%, 20% or 25% of evertyhing in the store, it just depended on what you were buying how lucky you were, and I got very lucky.
And considering I just woke up, I might just head into the city center today as well, since I really do not think I will do anything productive today. Will go up to Uni Library tomorrow to get books for my next essay.
I got a packet delivered today from Ireland, from Cathach books. Had a really hard time to find them on the internet, ended up sending a letter to Ireland, with the address my mom got me from a guy back home in Iceland. The guy from the bookshop contacted me through e-mail shortly after and I now am the proud owner of the book "Camchuairt ar Éirinn" or "Impressions of Ireland" or "Ferðaþættir frá Írlandi", a book containing all three languages, by Einar Ólafur Sveinsson from 1947. I really like it and it seems very interesting.

Harry Potter crazy

I'm going to see Harry Potter tonight. Yep, not this evening but tonight, well actually tomorrow even. It starts 00:05 am the 18th of November. On top of that, I am going into the city center in a short time, because there is a new Christmas market at the St. Enoch's square (a German one, much more fun than the French one, that was last weekend). Also, Debenhams is having a Christmas Sale, with special offers and fun stuff all around, open till midnight tonight, and I am very tempted to take a peek.
Anyway I am bound to end up spending a good deal of money, well actually, I hope I will so that I can finish the Christmas shopping early. I need to find out a way how I am going to get all the prezzies home save and sound.
It's going to be interesting!

I once was lost but now I'm found

I was without internet connection for nearly 24 hours and it was driving me insane, and not only me, because Árdís, Dinesh and Stephanie were all suffering as well. I broke down today and had to flee the house. Went to the cinema to drown my sorrows, instead I was nearly suffocated. I went to this really sci-fi nerdy movie, Serenity, (talk about it later) and had gotten quite comfortable in my seat when this girl comes and drags her freaky-looking boyfriend into the row beside me and he sits down beside me. After two minutes, he burps, so that I had to lean well away from him so I wouldn't get to know more about his breakfast. Just before the movie starts another burp, quite educating. And I am most sure that when approximately twenty or so minutes were left of the movie he farted. Because the air basically heated considerably up at that time with quite a malodious results. Disgusting!!!
The movie, aftur á móti, was incredibly fun. It is sort of based on the tv series Firefly (created by Josh Whedon, who created Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel). I just recently bought the Firefly episodes and loved it. I loved it so much I had to go see the movie and I do not regret it, mostly I regret and mourn the fact that they discontinued with the series. They were really good. Took a while to get into but as soon as you figured out what was happening it really made it obvious what a diamond in the rough the series are.

Eftir einn ei aki neinn

I had my presentation today, oh boy, I was scared. Not so much at first, but as more people came in through the door it got worse and worse. I managed to stammer through my presentation, my vocabulary completely diserted me and I was babbling most of the time through the ten - fifteen minutes I sat sweating there. I managed to finish but I was shaking all the way through. Afterwards I jokingly remarked to my friend that I we should head over to the bar, but we went to the Food factory and got something to eat before heading over to Old Irish. I would like to say we went straight there, but we actually stopped on the 1st floor at Jim's Bar and Claire had Malibu and Coke and I had Vodka with lemonade. Now, this was 11:30 am, that's right, before noon, we are soooo bad. But we made it to Old Irish on good time though and when the class started we were completely sober. We were starting with verbs. My personal oppinion is that verbs are put into languages as a deterrant for other people to learn them. But one good thing came from this, got back one of my assest assignment for Old Irish and I got a B+ for putting my 18 nouns into their 5 cases. Brilliant.
But still the day was not over, I still felt I needed something so I went and did a little retail therapy and feel much better now. Got the DVD series Firefly (by the same one that made Buffy and Angel) at half price, so I was pleased. Haven't been able to finish one episode though, I'm such a busy girl you know.

Queen of Homework

That's me. I truly have done myself proud. I have basically finished all five homework assignments that I have to hand in this week. Before Saturday I had already finished three although I left it until Sunday to finish them and printing them out. On Saturday, didn't do that much work, had already started on my fourth assignment a few days before and done well on Friday, so I let myself out for a while for food and fresh air. Árdís and I walked into the subwaystation and when we came into the city center she left me to go see some scary movie at the cinema and I started my Christmas shopping. When her movie was over we met up again and took a taxi home. Did some tiny work for my assignemt, but couldn't really focus on anything specific about it because I hadn't heard from the girl who is doing the same presentation so I was quite worried about a clash of subject. But I heard from her today (Sunday) and I got an epiphany and started writing and writing and finally I think I have down to a perfect .... or almost perfect presentation. Now I just have to tweak it about a bit and make a few notes to hand out in class and I am ready to go. I am in short, Brilliant!!! And it is not over yet, because I was on such a roll today, I even started on my fifth and last assignment for the week (I hope) and have almost finished it as well. I feel really good now about myself. The work may very well be rubbish but I did it and I did my best and you can not really ask for more in five days and five assignments.

I need sympathy :|

I got a wee shock today, as another assignment was dumped into my lap for next week. Oh, dear, I now have two assigments to hand in on Monday, one on Tuesday and do a presentation (worth 20% of overall assessment) on Wednesday. Which means for the next few days I will have no life. But since I am a good little girl and always deliver on time, I am awarding myself a little weekend break today. I came home from school today and got to work. Good thing to get my hands dirty right away, I figured. So surprise surprise, I finished one already. I had already done the preliminary work for it so no biggie. That is why I am going to the cinema with Árdísi tonight, we are going to see The Legend of Zorro. I am going since I really want to see it and because I won't have any time at the weekend. Tonight when we come home from the cinema, I will probably start doing the 800 - 1000 word report for Celtic Place names I have to hand in on Tuesday, since I started working on it yestarday evening and got a mountain of data and material to go through, so it shouldn't take too long. But then the headache starts. For Monday I have to hand in an assignment for Early Irish, I have to put lots of masculine, neuter and feminine nouns through their cases with their definite article and add adjectives as well. Ouch! And then I have to study like a crazy person for Early Irish Literature as I will be presenting a presentation on 'The imagery of kingship' in The Destruction of Da Derga's Hostel and in The Adventure of the Sons of Eochaid Mugmedóin on Wednesday. Now can you sympathize with me? Just a little bit. Please!

Basket case

That's going to happen to me after this year, I swear. I will end up as a basket case in some looney bin institution. This week I have been learning about cases in Old Irish (gömlu góðu föllin í málfræði). In Gaelic there are four cases, not too bad, most of the time, but in Old Irish there is one extra. I was telling my friend about them; the nominative (nefnifall), genetive (eignarfall), dative or the prepositional (þágufall), vocative (ávarpsfall) and the last one acusative (þolfall). After this long list of cases my friend suggested that there was a case missing from all of this and I tend to agree with her. There is definitely one case missing - it's the abusive case. There really should be something like that in the list as well. Maybe there even once was since in the old Indo-European language there were 8 cases.
In Icelandic we have four, but we also have 3 genders, masculine, feminine and neuter. Not a problem there, and very easy to understand and figure out what belongs where, when you get your head around the definite article. We have the same cases as Old Irish except the vocative one, I think it is because we are not used to address anyone that we do not know in any other way than: "Hey you!" or "Listen" (Heyrðu) which sounds better and not too rude in Icelandic.

Guess what ... I'm normal!!!

I mean it, really, I am. I figured it out while I was sitting in class today sounding out old Irish words. I am so sick and tired of people doing that "what, what are you studying?" thing-look, when I say that I am studying Celtic and Gaelic, but now I think I have finally crossed the threshold where it won't bother me 'that' much any longer. Sitting among people who have learned Greek and Latin (hello people, who have been pointing it out to me that it is a dead language and shouldn't be studied because of that, even though I want to) and also studied Breton (those who do not know, it is a Celtic language spoken in Bretagny in France), there is also a Welsh native speaker in our class, a girl from Hungary and one from Germany. I am finally vindicated, I do not have to feel ashamed explaining to people any more why I want to learn Scottish Gaelic or Old Irish (400 years old Gaelic) or even dabbling with Medieval Welsh when the time comes. This is what I am interested in, and this is what I want to do. I will probably never do anything in this field that is going to be of any consequence but I do not care. This is my passion, and something that I have wanted badly for more than ten years. I have finally allowed it to happen, I am in my third year and I am still surviving even though people left and right have been telling me that it might not be for me or that it is incredibly difficult. Get off my back, I earned my way here, I didn't cheat or lie or steal, this is my hard work behind these last two years and I am going nowhere.
If other people can take pride in learning languages, so can I!
Languages are important even dead or almost dead ones.

A weekend in pictures!

Sort of. On Saturday I sort of dragged my friend Árdísi to the cinema to see Wallace and Gromit; the attack of the were-rabbit. It was brilliant, I laughed myself silly through the whole movie. We also got a wee treat at the beginning when they showed us a short film about the Madagascar Penguins and their Christmas fun. It, also, was brilliant, although we felt it was still too early for Christmas thinking. And this was the beginning of a weekend in pictures. That evening we also watched the usual Saturday tv, Charmed, CSI and of course now, Spaugstofuna. I also watched some DVD before going to sleep.
Now Sunday was a bit different. I sneaked out into the city center without letting Árdísi know and did a bit of light shopping. Came home shortly after two o'clock pm and just a few minutes later Árdís nabbed me and I went with her out to Byres road. She was heading into Blockbuster to get a membership card for the video rental, so I decided to tag along and maybe get one of my own. When there it all took like 5 minutes tops and we had our membership card and all we had to do now was pick out our movies. Árdís took a horror film I was not interested in watching and then I took Shall we dance, the american version, because friends recommended it and I was interested in it. Then for the third movie we decided on Robots since I had never seen the whole film and she hadn't seen it at all. It was hilarious, we both laughed our heads off. It was good fun, and so, it is easy to say that my weekend was mostly spent in front of some sort of screen the whole weekend.
But now, I am off to bed, watching a bit of DVD before I have to get up and go to school!!!

First day at school

Boy, has anyone noticed how time flies while lying in bed and then when you finally drag your butt from under the covers and start getting ready to head out the door it's like time slows to a halfdead snail on an evening walk.
I woke up at 8 am and decided that since I was awake I could lie in bed for a few minutes I wouldn't need to get up until at least half past 8 to get ready. Did that, spent even a few more minutes in bed actually, but finally got dressed and started up my computer. I have checked all my e-mails, the latest news and stuff, finished getting everything ready for school and still the clock has not struck 9 am yet. This means that next monday, I will probably not go out of bed until ten minutes to nine ... what can I say, I love my bed.
So, wish me good luck on my first day back in school. Only two classes today, no one is ready yet. I have an hour in Early Gaelic Literature in Translation (sounds exciting doesn't it) and The Historical Development of the Gaelic Language (which really does sound exciting) or it's just me being a geeky nerd.

Connectivity

I got a webcam a few days ago, love it. Love technology. Very happy news.
I also love, being able to be in contact with friends and family. Just today, I was on msn talking to a friend of mine in Iceland and at the same time we were talking to our mutual friend Guðný who is currently in Brasil. Then a few moments later I was talking with my friend Margréti in Sweden through Skype. A lot of things have changes in 50 years or so, when the most you could expect from your loved ones abroad was a letter aound Christmas.

Drive by shooting in Glasgow

Wow, sometimes living in Glasgow can almost make you feel like you live in a Hollywood movie. A few days ago I saw on the news that there had been a drive by shooting on the M8 motorway though Glasgow, not so very far away from where I live. But far enough, so I wasn't bothered. It's not quite as far, but a possible measure would be from Ártúnsholti where I live and almost at the Grensásveg junktion, although not as straight a line as that one. Thankfully no one was killed or even injured, only one car was hit with bullets and they do not think it was pre-meditated shooting.

Web TV ... good thing

Wow, I finally got through the change in my internet connection, so I am now no longer connected through the University. That means that I am able to use Skype for instance, which I could not do before. And boy, do I feel like I have been freed, I am no more limited in my internet use like I was and I am able to be in contact with more people in more ways. But what also has opened my eyes, being able to use the internet more freely here, is the www.ruv.is website where I can watch the news from home as well as Spaugstofan. I watched the last episode yesterday and how I laughed. It was great, a small part of Iceland in my tiny computer in my tiny tiny room here in Glasgow. Nostalgia, it's great!

A weekend in few words ... well not so few!

I must say I had a really nice weekend, but I am getting bored. It feels like it is going to take for ever for the school to start, but then now, when I am so close to going to school and classes I feel as if I want another week off doing nothing that makes sense. For the last few days I have gone shopping and to the cinema just to get out of my itty bitty tiny winy room and get some air. On Saturday, Árdís and me even went to the cinema before noon. Went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and although I am a die hard fan of the old one, I have to say I didn't find this one that bad, although it was not fantastic.
Yesterday we also hit town but for whole different reason than shopping. We decided to dress up and go out on the town. Started with dinner at T.G.I. Friday's and cocktails of course. Then we started aiming for the UGC Cinema, but went to a tiny 24hour for some stuff and by that time we had completely forgotten the cineman and decided to hit the next pub or .... uh skemmtistað, drawing a complete blank on the english word for it. We ended up at Edwards, quite snobbish but not that posh I think, all the guys were searched at the doors before being allowed in, probably to keep from fights (with dangerous weapons) taking place or someone smuggling alcohol or other weird stuff inside. This place was sort of different from many places here in Glasgow, as it was basically two pubs in one, Edwards on the first floor, and on the second floor, where we really wanted to go but couldn't because they had closed of access to it when we finally figured what was up there. The place is called Reflex and is supposedly blasting out all the favorite 80's music. Damn, we wanted to go there, but maybe some other time. It was colorful to say the least to see the Glasgwegian nightlife for your own eyes. Thank God I had Árdís to commentate on it and compare it to the nightlife back home.
But we didn't last very long, me being so old and senile. Árdís commented on that her mother would be very glad to know I was the one going with her out at night, so she would still be coming home and reasonable hours, hehehehe. I still didn't go to sleep until almost 4 am and didn't wake up until 12 pm. Thankfully I hadn't had much to drink last night so I was not suffering any after effects.
Now, today was quite another matter in a fine day definition. Dear God, I swear Glasgow was flooded. It rained not just cats and dogs but a whole zoo. I nearly drowned going into the City Center and back again. I was sooo glad to get home and take a shower, and then finally get dry and warm again, ummm, nice feeling.
Soon, I will be heading to my waiting bed and read a for a few hours, until I fall asleep. School is just approaching way too soon right now, although I have been waiting for it impatiently for ... well, most of september. Now I am not so sure, but hey, we'll see if I am still alive at the end of the week.

Cinema etc

Great news, Árdís arrived yesterday and we are sharing an appartment. We are five now in the appartment, with me and Árdís, Dinesh and then two new additions, Stephanie from Germany and Stuart from Scotland. Have no idea from where, though, or what they are studdying, not had the opportunity to ask them yet.
Árdís and me went shopping to day to mostly spend time but also money, can't really help ourselves. But proudly I didn't spend very much, not that I didn't spend money, but I went into HMV and there was a sale - up to 70% off titles and I left them all alone, completely. I found a lot of titles I wanted but alas they were not on sale, boohooo, the story of me.
Then we decided that we had to spare our bank accounts and headed for the cinema and away from the shops. We waited more than an hour to see Pride and Prejudice, the new english version, with Kiera Knightly. And since I know my friend Hrafnhildur reads this blog I am not going to say anything else, she will just have to see for herself and then we can talk. But I can say this, I STILL LOVE THE BBC VERSION MORE!!!
Enough for now, more news coming soon.

Glasgow again

The flight yesterday went well, flew in to Glasgow through a route I have never travelled before but gave me a good view over the Western Isles and while flying there I checked out some properties that I would like, grins. Then I flew over a magnificent and beautiful house with a very very large garden if you get my meaning, but as we got closer I kind of got this feeling that I had seen this house before and then it clicked. Mount Stuart, went there with my mom and brother a few years ago. It is amazing this place, and quite amusing to come across it in air. Also on the way I saw a windmill farm, and I have to say I did not find it to be a sight pollution at all. It was actually quite nice to see it. Twirling about in a very relaxed way not the whizzing around that gives you a headache.
Came to my room at around 12 o'clock very tired but here. Tried to get my connections working with the computer and when that hadn't begun to work within half an hour I just plain called home. I knew mom was expecting my phonecall. It was good to hear from her, she was babysitting my sick niece and Katrín came on the phone and asked me where I was, when I told her she didn't want to talk to me anymore, she was very little.
I tidied my room and unpacked my bags and then I headed out into city center where I did some emergency shopping for the most basic things that I would need for the day. Then around four I came back to my room and after I had put the groceries away I went to bed and the next time I woke up it was 8 o'clock in the evening.
Had my dinner, and then I turned my computer on and waited to hear from people. Mom and me were trying to work out the new hive-phone but that wasn't working for some unexplainable reason and then Skype wasn't working either so mom tried to phone me the conventional way but she didn't have the right phonenumber the first few times she tried to call me, so in the end I phoned her and then she phoned me and then we tried the hive again and it still didn't work. So who knows what will happen with phone connections in the future, but I hope it will sort itself out in the future.

Big buisness

I am not at the airport waiting for my plane to leave for Glasgow. I have been feeling a bit queasy this morning, I usually do before flying, especially this early in the morning, but I am getting better. I have had some breakfast at the Saga Buisness lounge, which is an incredible experience. Comfort and space, the lounge has been moved from the original spot and is now larger and more modern and techonologically able to serve the buisness people traveling through Iceland. I am both excited and uneasy, uneasy to be leaving everyone behind and also excited to be starting again at Uni.
I miss everyone already and I haven't even left the country yet.
I'll hopefully be in touch later today to tell about the rest of my journey to Queen Margaret Halls, Glasgow!

Snow in Esja

Vow, autumn has fallen, hehehe! I went outside this morning and felt the cold crips air of the mountains hit me in the face. Refreshing!!! It wasn't until a bit later that I looked up to Esja and got a little shock. Esja had gotten a white cap during the night. The white snow line reached almost more than half way down the slopes. It was amazing. It it was necessary to see before leaving the Frost kalda frón. Now it looks like winter is coming sooner than last year and I hope that when I come back home it will be White Christmas.

Glasgow shops beware

Well, here we are again! Mom and me, and no one is holding the purse strings. We arrived yesterday and took the day easy. We arrived in Glasgow shortly before noon, and the rooms weren't ready at the hotel so we went into the city center to get something to eat. Of course the shops near us weren't overlooked so we brought a few bags along with us to the hotel again. Then I went to a quick visit to my room at the Queen Margaret Halls to check if everything is all right. It was so I just went back to the hotel where I found mom in a very good condition. She was hardly affected by all the things we had been doing. She was even in better shape than I was. So we took the rest of the day easy and had dinner at the hotel. It is a really nice hotel, the minibar is free, and there is Gin, Sherry and Whiskey in decanters as well for the guests enjoyment. There is also an Executive Lounge for guests where they can get coffee and all sorts of drinks and alcohol free of charge. Went to bed after reading a few passages of the Black Death (cheery stuff).
Woke up at 7 o'clock in the morning, had breakfast and then headed off to the University. I didn't really feel that I was going to an exam, it sort of just didn't fit into the picture. But everything went fine, I am most likely sure that I didn't fail it so that's for the most part. Just glad it is over. After the exam I went back to the hotel. And yes, Björk, I travelled with the subway!
Then mom and I hit the shots, and oh boy, people who get sales commission and met us are very very happy tonight. Didn't really come home from the shops until 8 o'clock pm, aside from one short stop at the hotel. Then we had dinner again at the hotel, delicious beef fillet. Right now we are just lounging about and watching tv. I think that is an excellent idea, because my feet can't carry me from the chair I am sitting in right now and into the bathroom (and the chair is on wheels). Write more soon and maybe then I will have some pictures to put on the website as well.

Coming and going!

See, not tomorow but Wednesday, I am going to Glasgow for a few days. Have to take an exam, I couldn't take in January. Yup, weird, they have their resits just once a year, annoying too. But anyway, going on Wednesday, which means three days vacation from work, always a plus, but the down side of it is that I won't get paid while I am in Glasgow spending money. Mom is very opptimistic of coming with me, she felt it was time, she had an opperation nearly a year ago and this is sort of a try-out since I will only be going for a few days and she will have me to assist her with everything.
It will be good to get away from work for a few days, although I like working there the customers that I face nearly everyday can sometimes drive my crazy and some of my co-workers really drive me up the wall as well. I nearly snapped the head of one last week, although he deserved it.
Bi mi ag innseachach eachdraidh a-nise, hope I will do ok at the exam on Thursday. It will be nice when it is over, and I can have some fun.
Miss you all my friends far and wide.

Home Alone

Nah, not quite, but my closest friends are now all over the world, spanning 4 continents. Monday my friend Margrét was the last to leave. She was going to Sweden where she will be attending University in Skövde for a year. Miss you already, Margrét and her sister Guðbjört is working for a humanitarian organization in India. My doctor friend Guðný Stella, who graduated as a doctor this summer went on a trip through South-America (and almost got eaten by a fish in the Amazon jungle). Then my friends Hrafnhildur and Guðmundur went for two weeks to Orlando Florida to chill out for winter. Didn't really work as Gummi got sunburned, hehehehe.
So, here I am left all alone home in Iceland, where if my phone rings (at all) my mother cheekily asks if there is anyone left in the country that wants to talk to me. :Þ
Because of this, I have just been having fun of course, working longer hours and doing more work at the genealogy service. Yesterday I stayed at work for nine hours, and most of my time I spent working my ass off, only taking an hour total for lunch and coffee ... eh, coke-break and then I went to the genealogy service where I worked for about two hours. So when I came home I was soooo tired, when I sat down in front of the TV I dosed off. I went to sleep at eleven o'clock last night. That has not happened since I was ten or something, this was soo weird, and weirder ... I slept through the night in the same position all night through.

Indian night and a dinner with friends

The weekend is almost over and I have been quite busy. Yesterday, my friend Hrabba, Gummi and I had an Indian night theme. It was amazing and worked out well, although we sorely missed our friend Guðný Stellu who is Tarzan-ing through the Amazon jungle from Bolivia to Brasil right about now. Gummi didn't get to wear a turban this year, since I forgot it at home. Sorry Gummi, next time I will definitely remember. Hrabba wore her yellow saree and wow it is yellow. But she was amazing in it, very becoming. I on the other hand wore my new off-white and green salwar kameeze, very nice. We ate quite early and then finished getting ready and went out. Yep, you see, my friend is learning bellydancing and her teacher was moving the place to a different location and it was the opening night, so it was very fitting for us to show up in our "múnderings", well I think that it was, and my god, it was incredible, what she has done with the place, very nice indeed, very cosy. After that the night sort of died down or at least became more relaxed. On the way home, we picked up their friends and had a short quite evening at their place, before the guys went into the city center and a few minutes later my friend gave me a ride home. It was a very nice evening and the food was lovely, but the problem was..... WE MISS YOU GUÐNÝ!!!

Tonight I had dinner with another set of friends. This time with my friend Margrét (who I have known since we were 3 years old) and her boyfriend Krissa. They invited me and Steina, Guðbjörts boyfriend (she is Margréts twin) over for dinner because they are soon leaving the country. Yup, they are going to Sweden for University and they are leaving in a week. So I will be all alone then. The food was absolutely delicious, and now I am absolutely hooked on roasted nuts. The only thing was the same as yesterday, there was someone missing from the party. This time Guðbjört but she is in India, and has been since January so it's been a while since we saw her and we all miss her very much. Anyway I am now getting ready for bed, because I have to wake up tomorrow to go to work.

OOOO, ps. I am getting more and more excited about going back out to Uni in september. I can hardly wait.

Success!!!

I made it. I did it. I got an e-mail from my head of department yesterday ... finally. And he told me that there was a letter on the way but he also told me the context of it. I MADE IT! I got into Single Honors in Celtic, so I have 2 more years left in Uni. Where I will be learning early Irish and medieval Welsh among other very interesting subject. Claire and Joanne and Sharon, girls we are on our way to stardom. Well weird-dom at least, since these medievalists are always quite eccentric and fun to watch.
Yesterday was a great day for me I guess. After getting these wonderful news we, mom, dad, my grandmother and I went for a drive to visit my brother and his family where they were staying for a week at a summerhouse (sumarbústað) near Laugarvatn. When we got there the temperature read 36°c and it was scorching. There was no need to grill anything today, I was already well done. So we went to Hotel Geysir in Haukadal and got incredible good food, with a great view over the geysers erupting. It was amazing, because of the weather and heat, and the sun. But on our way to Selfoss we got caught in fog, but we made it all the way to Hveragerði where we stopped in Eden to get some coffee and final stretch before we went home. In the hills above Hveragerði there was such a thick fog that we were hardly able to follow the road, but as soon as we got to the top the sun was blistering bright and rather difficult to drive because it was eye level with the drivers. But we made it and the sun kept on shining for a while more. But it was the best day we have had for quite some time.

Nuts

I am going nuts, completely. Friday, my mom calls me at work and lets me know that there is a letter from the Univeristy waiting for me. I was soooo pleased, finally the letter I was waiting for had arrived. It was still six hours until I got home, but I made it through the day, even though my friend Kristín volunteered to take me home during coffee break so I could find out what the letter said. She was just as curious. But when I arrived home and after eating dinner I finially opened the letter. Biggest disapointment for months. I am soo mad at them. This was not the letter I was expecting but a letter informing me about changes in payment of tuition fees, something I have known for months. Aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggg! I soooo wanted to smash someones face in (and if that person ever reads this blog will know who he is). Why the bloody hell can't the darn department send out the letters. I am going nuts waiting. This letter has some sigificance for me, if it didn't I wouldn't be acting like this. But I am just soo mad right now.

Just a little note

As far as I know, and I am very thankful for it, none of my friends or anyone I know were in London on Thursday when the bombing took place. It was quite horrific to see this and watch just as I left for work. Throughout the day we sought news on the website and from people wandering through the workplace. In London there are more than 2000 Icelanders that live and work there. My heart goes out to all in London!
Here in Iceland everything is just normal, boringly so, although many would probably give everything to have that right now. It has been raining for I don't know any longer how many days, but it is getting a bit tiresome. It has also been quite windy and almost like fall/autumn (Whatever!). But I have had a good week and a good weekend. The plus side of the rain is that my allergies aren't bothering me as much right now. :)

War of the Worlds

Why do Americans alway have to destroy a good thing. The book War of the Worlds is a literary genius considering when it was written. As a blockbuster movie today, it is CRAP. It is pointless! It came across as nothing more substantial than Americans in a marathon competition.

SPOILER!!!
Why do these VERY INTELLIGENT aliens plant something like these tripods MILLIONS of years ago, to come bothering earth now. Why not stone age? And if these VERY INTELLIGENT aliens had been studying us for MILLIONS of years why did they never find out about a thing called micro organism. And what was it with this pointless invasion as well. Spewing blood everywhere, for what purpose, was this suposed to be disgusting.
And funny how Americans try to convey themselves as INTELLIGENT with making this movie with Americans starring in a not so glorious roles. The best view of the Americans in the film was from behind. Run for your lives. Before the movie was halfway through I felt like slapping all Americans. "Yeah, why don't we just stand around and be easy target for them aliens, we are Americans and have to have a front row seat to die! It is our right, our American dream!" And the kid, "Dad, I wanna fight, I wanna fight, I wanna fight." "Yeah, go ahead and get your self killed, what do I care!" Stupid!
Oh, yeah, and if anyone cried over this film, it was probably of boredom or relief that it was finally over when the film ended.
This is nothing but Americans trying to glorify the use of biological weapons ... just, see how a micro organism destroyed those mean bad machines from outer space. This is why it is ok for ust to do the same with those mean bad people that hate us, because we are Americans and stand for justice and truth.
Americans! The reason they hate you is because of crappy films like this. Get over yourself, you are not the most perfect "democracy" in the world, and I use the term lightly.
AAAAAAAAhhh, I wan't my money back!

Impatience is a virtue

At least the way I see it. I have been biting my nails to the quick worrying about my grades and honors and all the stuff that goes with it. I finally cracked today and wrote to my head of department asking if by some chance my letter had gotten lost on the way here from Germany with too little payed for safe delivery before the next millenium. But no, he told me that they hadn't still sent them out, they had meant to but hadn't, and he hoped that they would do it this week. This is very relaxing news, very calming, especially if you know my department you know that this is good news. Because this department is very un-organized and just getting the news that they are thinking about you, is very heartwarming. It will reach me sometimes in the near future. When that is, I have no idea but I do know that it is closer than the next millennium.
So back to crossing my fingers and leaving my nails alone.

I got a B :)

Thanks Sharon, I nearly got a heart attack from your little note. But congratulations with your grade. I completely paled up when I saw that they had posted the results for Celtic. I didn't even dare to check, because I was sure I wouldn't get the results I wanted. But I did it. I got a B. Be me veree happee noo.

Hæ hó jibbí jei og jibbíi jei ....

Það er kominn 17. júní. And June 17th has also gone. It was the 61 year anniversary of Iceland Independence and the weather was baking us. I took some photos but I haven't been able to put them on the web yet, because it has been crazy here. But it was amazing, went with my brother, sister-in-law and niece to buy her a balloon. She was determined to get a Spiderman balloon and because at first we didn't find one she ended up with a Tweety balloon as well. Mom and dad then invited us all out to eat at Ruby Tuesday and after that I hitched a ride with my bro to my friends house where we played couch-potatoes as well as Carcassone and Trivial Pursuit. Couldn't have asked for a better day.
Then it was just normal weekend for me, Saturday not much happened I just bought myself some stuff, but on Sunday I went shopping with my friend Margréti, but I couldn't find anything to buy even though I was shopping for a birthday present for my friend. She on the other hand managed to find something for her sister.
Yesterday, monday 20th of June, was a crazy day at work. I was working for more than 11 hours, and was exhausted after that but nooo, the day wasn't finished yet. Five minutes after I came home I called my friend who had been trying to reach me. And she wanted to know if I was interested in coming with them to the cinema to see Batman begins. A very good action and adventure film, not good if you are looking for something earthshattering. But better than the other four films that have been made about Batman.

Wedding and more

I went to a wedding yesterday of my friends Guðný and Róbert. The wedding photos should be on the website now. It was amazing, soo beautiful. The sorry state is that the battery finished in my camera before the evening was over so I will have to get some photos from others as well. The ceremony was beautiful and I was reunited with friends I hadn't seen in a very long time. We all had lots of fun (I think and hope). I wish the happy couple all the best!
But today was a little different from yesterday. Today would have been my grandfathers 88th birthday but he passed away last year. But mom and dad and I took flowers to his grave as well as his parents and also my grandfathers grandfather in another cemetery. We also too flowers to plant at my great-grandparents and uncles as well. It was a lot of work, planted 40 flowers in total, but it is nice now. We decided to tend my great-great-grandfathers grave as well, since my grandfather used to do it as well, and since we also knew where it was. His name was Magnús Egilsson and he was born in 1805 and was a stonemason. Pretty impressive history in the cemeteries, is my way of thinking.
Today is also my parents 45 year wedding anniversary so we went out for dinner tonight. It was sooo nice, the food is always good at Lauga-ás resturant. (Sharon, I reckomend it!!!)
Oh, and Sharon and my friends in foreign countries. I went to sleep after 2 o'clock last night and the sun was still shining on the horizon. Now it is completely bright 24 hours of the day, sooo nice. I just want to go out and take a long walk, the weather has also been very nice which makes it that much nicer to think that you can go and take a walk at 2 o'clock in the morning without having to dart between lampposts as quickly as possible or skulk around dark alleys.

Work tomorrow

OOO, sounds fun. Well it does, I think, I hope they haven't changed everything from when I was there last time. That's what I am most afraid off. Now I'll be the one standing in the middle of nowhere and picking my nose wondering where I am and everyone around me laughing at the confused idiot. I am really looking forward to seeing my buddies again. Although some are probably all ready on vacation for the summer.
I bought a gift for my friends wedding on Saturday. Looking forward to seeing them all again. Have no idea who will be there, if there are anyone that I know. I sort of feel like I should get a date hired like in the Wedding Date movie, but at the moment I am not that desperate.... well, more like beyond that. Who knows, maybe I can bribe someone cute. But I am still looking forward to it.

For my buddies in Scotland;
The weather here has been quite wet but a blessing because it has been a dry spell here. But around weekend it should clear up and be nice and sunny. Right now my "mocking-bird" is laughing at me outside my window, it is nice to hear him again. It is rather cloudy so it is quite dark tonight although technically speaking it is still light.
My niece has been wonderful, all the time it is just, Elin, Elin, Elin all through the day. It is sooo wonderful to be able to hold her again and cuddle her.

I'm home :)

Vow, this has been an incredible day! I woke up at 7 o'clock and was boarding the plane just after 11 o'clock. I landed in Iceland at half past one (or twelve in Iceland). My whole family was there to greet me and my wee niece came flying into my arms. It was so beautiful. Mom and dad, bro and sis-in-law, it was great. Shortly after we came home and I had unloaded most of my stuff from the suitcases we went to my uncle's place, because it was his birthday on Friday and today it was Sjómannadagurinn and it is quite fitting for him to have a small birthdaybash today because he was born on Sjómannadag. Now I am sitting at my brothers computer at his place because we were invited for dinner. It really has been a great day, but I am really very worn out now, I almost fell asleep in the car over here and it is only about five minute drive from our place. IT'S GOOD TO BE HOME!!!

FINISHEDFINISHEDFINISHEDFINISHEDFINISHED

Just making a statement, I have finished my exams! Such a relief. I think my brain went dead afterwards. Even though we went to Jims bar I did not have anything but Coke but in a short while I was babbling. I think it was just oxygen gathering in my brain after I let out all the Gaelic and nothing was coming in to fill in the gaps. No more studying for a while. When I came home I had my dinner and afterwards while I was tidying my room and going through my junkyard I had one of those Breezers and I don't think that helped, I think for the first time I actually got drunk. Amazingly I didn't need very much yesterday to get drunk, first oxygen and then only 5% and I was seeing everything in very nice rainbow-y colours.
This is the last day in Glasgow and tomorrow morning I leave for home.
Or as the Glaswegian would say:
My heid is deid and Eim goin' heim!

Day after tomorrow

I am coming home the day after tomorrow. The last exam is today, and I have been hammering gaelic into my head while waiting for the washing machines to finish. I will be meeting Claire at the Food Factory at the QM around noon when she arrives in Glasgow and then we will probably go to Jim's Bar after the exam. I don't think I will get out of that. But why would I want to, it is my last exam and I deserve to enjoy myself afterwards after all this.
Maybe I will write again before I go home, hei, wait a minute, of course I will, this has absolutely been my salvatio during the exams. I would have gone nuts or driven my friend Margréti nuts with my continuous e-mails. Poor girl would never be able to finish anything unless she would learn to ignore me. But she would never do that. Noooo.

Three Down - One to Go

Only one more exam and I am free. Can't wait til I get to take my first breath of free air tomorrow. I have to wait until 4:30 do that, darn it. But that is what I am most waiting for right now if we are looking at things in a chronological order - to breath. Then I am most looking forward to going home. Yes, I realise that anyone that has been reading my posts in the last days is fully aware that I am going home, but I won't stop until I am Home so chill.
Todays exam went well (I think) won't really know until I get the results but it is definitely not a fail. Finished in under an hour and had a half hour to spare to think of new things. But alas, my brain was dead and on a more worrying note it hasn't come back alive. I think I am going to have to jumpstart it so I can do some Gaelic work. Brain, listen: "You only have one more day of work and then you can switch off until Sunday, deal!" OO, I felt it move so I better get to work.

So much to do, so little time left

Yess, I am coming home on Sunday. Loooking sooo much for coming home I am not even thinking about the exams that are left. Don't know if that is a good thing (as in I am not getting stressed about them) or if it is a bad thing (as in I think I know everything ... well, I do but I am not sure the teachers agree).
Tonight is the last episode of Desperate Houswifes, very very lucky to see it. I would have gone nuts if I was missing it, way too exciting. Saw a wee sneak peak last night before I went to bed, úúúú.
Finally finished most of my shopping, last minute shopping will take place on Saturday and on the airport on my way HOME.
Two more exams and I am finished for the time being. Then a time of praying and hoping comes, where I wait for the results with dread and sort of "I-don't-really-give-a-"#$%&" attitude towards all this, while secretly gnawing my nails to the quick. EEEEEwweewww. Please be gentle Uni.

Let's contemplate

I have been thinking about telling you guys something for a few days, but I have decided that it is going to be a surprise to everyone, hehehehe. It concerns a very very brillant gift I got from friends. You guys are great! I am getting extremely emotional here, just thinking about it. My family has been threatening exposure when I arrive at the airport on Sunday, but I hope this is an empty threat, hehehehe. I even threatened to go out the back door and my brother asked if I was feeling that important, like a celebrity having to sneak out through the back, hehehehe. It will be sooo much fun to tell everyone at work, and now that I think about it. I really really need a very very big hat for that wedding I am going to. I have to fit the image, I really do. See what I find at the airport if I can smuggle a big hat home, through customs, hehehehe!!!
And don't worry, everyone will eventually find out what this surprise is, but until then ... mwhahahahaha, the last laughter is MINE.

Last Night

I had such good fun last night. It was sort of my birthday party even though my birthday was on the 24th. But because of the exams we waited until the 25th to do something fun. And fun it was. About 8:30 Dee appeared at my door and forbid me to enter the kitchen, I was not even to venture out the room no matter what. Then ten minutes later or so there was a knock on my door and it was Laura it was soo great to see her again. And becuase she had been forbidden to go near the kitchen as well, then we just spent nearly an hour chatting in my room. Then we were called into the kitchen, Emma came as well and Dinesh and Deepak were waiting in the kitchen with a wonderful Indian feast for us. It was heavenly, with all kinds of food and rice and everything you could imagine. They also had Coke for us and I had red wine and Emma had oddly enough Baileys and milk, very odd that. We ate until we were full to bursting and our mouths were blistering but they truly outdid themselves they even had desert. Mango and almond/pistachio icecream and Indian sweet heated in the microwave and it was gorgeous. It was delicious and wonderful.
I even got gifts, from Laura I got a bottle of red wine and and a hair clip and also Aroma therapy spray and lip balm also from the boys I got a Burberrys bag and a cap. Really cool now. It was a beatuiful evening wich ended with me lying in bed watching tv until I fell asleep with a smile on my face.

Thank you all

Thanks to everyone who has been sending me birthday cards and well wishing. I miss you all, look forward to see you in 11 and 1/2 day (when I arrive back home).
Today was my first exam day and although it went all right, you can always write more than you have time to so I was really falling on time but I hope I managed to safe my ass. It is just always oddly surprising how they can ask a question that makes the question look like it is in a foreign language.
After the exam I went to pick up my two essays I had yet to collect. I didn't want to ruin my mood for the exam if the essay marks were bad, but they weren't and I am sooooo happy. In my Celtic Civilisation essay I got a B-, happy with that because poetry analizing is not my thing. And I got an A- in Gaelic Bárdachd( poetry) which makes me think 'hummm, maybe I have a future in this' but no, I don't think so. But this was a great brithday present.
Now I have finished 25% of my exams only 75% left, it will go down another 25% tomorrow. I am just sooo looking forward to this being over.

Eurovision

Doh, I favored Moldova! I really wanted Moldova to win. My friend and I voted for Moldova and when UK cast their voting and Moldova only recieved 2 points from us, we knew that those two votes were ours, hehehee. Although I must say, we were quite alright with Greece winning, although not a really great song, just your typical Eurovision song, but anything that kept Israel down was ok with us. We really don't like Israel right now. It is quite understandable that Spain, UK, Germany and France don't get any voting at all really, because they are iron-clad in the compeition, both they contribute so much of the funding for the contest and also they can't be kicked out so why vote at all for them.
I also quite liked the song from Spain and from Ukraine. Terry Wogan the presenter here in Uk is hilarious, this was the first time my friend watched the Eurovision in the UK and we were rolling around laughing from his comments about the contestants and the countries.
Few comments (loosely remembered);
1. when the Moldova song was on; "this song came through the semi-finals, and if this is a taste of what is to come, then God help us!"
2. when Cyprus gave UK 5 points; "I won't say anything about Cyprus!"
3. when the French song was on; "Princess Leah!"
4. when Romanian was singing; "Does she remind you of somone, maybe a younger version of Ruby Wax!"
5. when someone gave their neighbouring country 12 points; "well, this is a surprise!"
He was completely politically incorrect and we loved him for it. It it had been anyone else than Terry Wogan he would have been taken off the air as soon as the show started, but it was just great. Especially when he was making fun at the countries competing and we actually knew what he was talking about.
Looking forward to the competition next year!

Poetry-crazy

Since I am doing really well learning my 10 Gaelic poets and 13 poems I am going to the store and buy some junk food for tonight's Eurovision contest. I also just need the air. I have discovered since starting to revise for the exams that I need air in more quantity than I usually do. I am not going far today, just keeping it local so I won't be too long out there as well, because if I am taking time off tonight to watch the Eurovision (even though we are not competing) I am going to have to get cracking as soon as I step through the doors again. We will see how that works for me. If there is anyone out there, wish me luck with the revision. I am going crazy here with minimum people contact.

Thursday, May 19, 2005

Mwhuhahahah

Iceland did not get through the semi-finals in the Eurovision song contest, surprising, not really. But I still look forward to seeing the final finale on Saturday.
Right now, I am walking on sunshine. I just got a 15min massage and it was heaven. But the poor guy probably injured his hands with trying to work out the sement in my muscles, hehehehe. But I know that I will sleep very well indeed tonight, which is why I am soon going to disappear from the screen and give myself over the the nice place in my dreams.
Tomorrow it will be 2 weeks until I finish my exams and 2 weeks and 2 days until I get home. Looking forward to it, immensely, really, if anyone doubts me, look for me on the 5th when I step out from the airplane and kiss my native homeland. Well, maybe I will just kiss my family, but I will be really really glad when I get home.

A Little Hero

He is only six months old but is a very brave boy. He is my cousin, whom I have never seen but I think of often, because of what has been going through. He was very ill from the day he was born and just yesterday had a twelve hour opperation. He recieved a piece of liver from his mother and they are now both doing all right, but still in ICU. His dad appropriately called yesterday the Long Tuesday, but hopefully now the worst is over. He said in his blog today that they could already see improvements. Keep on getting better little guy and hope you and your mum recover soon so that you can come home that much sooner.

Breik!!!

Ahhh, it was good to get a wee break from studying tonight. Árdís and me went to the cinema, surprise, surprise, and saw The Kingdom of Heaven. Ok, film, rather lengthy, two jokes in the whole two hours and twentyfive minutes, but ok if the price ticket is like under 4 pounds for the both of us.
I studyed from 11:30 to 14:00 when I took just over an hour break for lunch, then from 15:30 to 17:00 and managed to do some pretty good damage to the pile of books I have to read through. Finished one book already and started on the next one. Basically, it was Scotland today, tomorrow it is Ireland and over the weekend it is Wales. Then next week, focus on Gaelic Bárdachd (poetry) and Eachdraich (history).

Speaking exhaustion

I was going to say oral exhaustion, but decided against it since some of you might get the wrong impression of me. I had my Gaelic oral exam yesterday, and at the end I was completely stressed out and was really making a mess of things, trying to express my opinion on the Scottish and English Parlament and taxes in Iceland in Gaelic. I came out from the room, shaking, and could hardly even manage to speak English. So while I waited for my friend Claire I tried to calm down. When she came out I saw where we were headed. We ended up in Jim's Bar trying to 'sober up' after this horrifying experience. Thankfully, this is probably the last time I HAVE to speak in Gaelic, but you never know if I am stuipd enough to go out seeking some outlet of my Gaelic.
Claire is now on a plane heading for Las Vegas, taking a week off, feck all! She is not going to do anything that makes sense for a week and then come back and study for the exams that are in two weeks time. I must say, I would never be able to do that. I would be freaking out from guilt of not being at home studying for the exams. Enjoy the holiday, Claire!!! Bring back some juicy stories for me, am going to need it after all the studying.

In the deep end ... and drowning

I am preparing for my oral exam in Gaelic on Tuesday, but damn, what have I gotten myself into. I said I was going to talk about the Icelandic Parlament, and right now I am like, ... aaaa, what is there to say about it.
Tha Parlamaid na Innis Tíle? Doh! Chan eil mi fios agam. I only have a few lines, about 2 and a half minute long, so I have to find something more to say about it. But what? Chan eil Parlmaid na Innis Tíle mar am Pharlamaid na Sasainn no Alba. Gaaa, that doesn't help with points and on top of that the Parlament back home is different from the Parlament here so many of the words and what-nots they have here we don't. This is proving to be challenging. Maybe something like this: Bha Parlamaid na h-Innis Tíle stéidhichte ann an 930. Bha Parlamaid suidhichte air Thingvellir. O chionn, bha am Parlamaid choinnich gach bliadhna gus an ochdamh linn deug. An sin, choinnich am Parlamaid airson uile ráithe do naoi míos dhen bliadhna. ‘S e an seann Pharlamaid ann an saoghal, no co-dhiú, ann an Eorpa. Ann an 1380 Innis Tíle rach a-steach am Crún an Damnhairg. Ann an 1874 fhuair Innis Tíle ar bonn-stéidh agus sinn fhéin-riaghladh againn. Thug le Innis Tíle neo-eismeileachd ann an 1944 bhon Danmhairg. Although this is only a small part, but I could start with this. The years in themselves will probably add a whole minute to the speech anyway. 1874 – ochd ceud deugh trí fichead ‘s a ceither dheug. Try say that very fast over and over again. [Ohk keiud djíug trí fíched sa keiher jíug] bókstaflega.

The answer is: 42

Yess, nerds know this. Or at least I know it and my friends and we watch Start Trek and boast about it, so I think that makes us a bit nerdy. But we are also quite proud of our nerdiness. But that is not why I wanted to nerd this down. I wanted to tell everyone that I went to see The Hichhikers Guide to the Galaxy tonight. And it is great, funny, hilarious, with a very strange song that catches on quite easily (according to a friend of mine, hehehehe, no name mentioned) and a great story about a whale contemplating existence. It has everything, a beginning, a middle and an end and I was actually quite sad when it ended because I would have liked to see more. There were also a lot more nerds there than we, because I heard laughter echoing through the theatre. AAAAAAAAAAaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, nice memories.

Sumardagurinn fyrsti - ójá

Vow, it is soooooo warm today. The sun is shining and the thermometor I have shows all between 18°c and up to 24°c. And I am roasting. I am sitting now in my room, the window full out and at the the sun isn't shining but it gives little comfort. But I like it anyway. This is how it should be on the first day of summer. I am even wearing my summer gift from mom.
I am trying to gear myself up to starting on my essay, I am getting there but as you can see I am waisting a few minutes here writing about nonsensical stuff.

Monday, April 18, 2005

I finally got it

I finally got my essay from Celtic back. I said to my mom on Friday that it was better to get the bad news after the weekend so it wouldn't spoil it but damn I didn't expect this.
I got a B+ .... a B+ vow, I am sooooo happy. I saw my grade 17/20 and I sooo couldn't believe it, I actually had to ask him what that meant in letters (A, B, C) I was so astounded. If I didn't have ears I would have been really strange to look at today because my smile would have reached a circle.
I really I really could kiss my teacher now (but really for a completely different reason.... he's just so damned cute). Smoooch!

Busy shopping

Didn't write anything over the weekend because I was too busy shopping. That's sooo me. Although I didn't buy much on Saturday I let the air out of my purse yesterday. I went on an hour and a half walk through the garden and down Great Western Road on a shopping spree. I bought three skirts, sooo pleased and they are sooooo nice. Then I stopped at an Indian Sweet shop, and yes, I bought a selection of sweets that I have no way of pronouncing let alone did I even know what I was eating. But it tasted delicious. Especially the orage-yellow swirls (Hrabba knows what I am talking about). I still have some left, but it is disappearing fast. I went to Music Mania which has music from Bollywood movies and I bought the cd from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (Something is happening) and it is beautiful.
Then just for the fun of it, I stepped into a furniture store that has furniture for children and oooooooo, it is just beautiful, I wish I was a little spoiled brat here, that I could get some of the things they have. www.somethingspecial.info Just take a look and drool.
And as someone might have noticed on my msn messenger yesterday there are now less the seven weeks until I come home. Yeah, which means it is getting closer to the exams. Eaks.
Good luck everybody and me too.

Fire alarm andskoti

Jamm, It happened! It had to happen, and happen soon. There has been maybe one since Christmas. And so everyone OUT. I was having such a nice evening watching a Bollywood film and then this. And it is cold outside, even though it is like 5°c. Thank God, it's Saturday tomorrow and I can sleep until noon for all I care. But damn, I hate those noisy fire alarms and all because some girl took a shower or was blow drying her hair or whatever. The funny bit was she was a bit mortified over having the fire men standing in her room with her "unmentionables" spread about. OOOOh, I am soooo bad. Híhíhíhí.

Essays aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh

Ok, this was just one funny day for essays. Let the story begin.
Yesterday Mr. Byrn came into the seminar room to let a few of us know that we would be getting our essays returned today instead of yesterday like we had signed up for. Cool, no problem there ... I thought. I came in earlier today to pick up some books for my next essay and then went to meet my teacher. I came in and he searched high and low but could not find it. I was afraid it had been so bad that I had just thrown it out with the garbage. But no, everything was just cluttered and he wasn't all there so he asked me to come again on Monday and then he would definitely have it ready. So three times a charm or ALLT ER ÞEGAR ÞRENNT ER shall we hope. And then in Gaelic we got the essay topic for the second essay we have to do in that course as well. So now I am just up to my neck in essays and I am really drowning and have had enough. Give me some good news tomorrow, please and no more essays.

I'm back ...

In Glasgow! I am soooo tired right now, that I am barely making any sense of what I am doing. Árdís and I are planning to get some food soon and then try to see how we manage with watching the 3 missing episodes of Desperate Houswives, that we missed when we were home. I have been up since 4 o´clock this morning, and I haven't been able to sleep a wink since coming here.
I tried to write once during easter break, but something wasn't working right so I just skipped fiddling any more with the blog. Maybe it will come up now, that I have written this, unless this goes kablooey too. Anyways, I'll write something meaningful later, right now I just had so say "hi" again.
And on the brighter side of life: 8 weeks until I come home for summer!!!

I'm babysitting!

Vow, there has been so much to do since coming home, I haven't been able to write anything. I have hardly at all been on the web since coming home. Been too darn busy. But now that I am babysitting I do have time, which might seem weird to some. But the thing is the baby is asleep. Yup, my wee niece is fast asleep here beside me in the sofa. She's sooo cute. Mom and dad got to go to the movies tonight so I was drafted into the role of babysitter.
It is always getting shorter and shorter until I have to go back to Glasgow and then I only have two months until I can get home again. But I have been having the most wonderful time here at home with family and friends and very often I wish I could combine the best of Scotland with the best of Iceland.

What has gotten into me

I woke up before seven this morning. I had put the alarm on for eight so that I could go do my laundry but since I woke up at seven I just took my washing down then instead. So now I am finished and can relax until I go to Uni later.
But I still don't know what has gotten into me. I think it is excitement of going home in just 2 days. Yup, two days. The day after tomorrow.
I am going shopping today for the last time (I say) before I go home.
Desperate Housewifes are on tonight and then tomorrow Árdís will go home. Lucky she, going tomorrow but I have to wait for the Day after Tomorrow. But I am just soooo excited, looking forward to seeing all my friends and family. It is going to be sooo nice.

2 Days until I am Home!!!

Shopping mad

This is sooo me. I am injured, can hardly walk, but just give me some painkillers and I am off shopping. The funny thing was that I went to sleep last night at one o'clock am, not bad, then the next thing I know it is twelve noon. I got a shock, I imediately checked my phone because Árdís and I had planned to go shopping today, which in the end we did. Got into the city center at one and had some lunch. Then we hit the stores and shopped till we dropped, or at least I. I could hardly walk when I came back to my room, and the clock showed that it was nearly six o'clock.
My foot is now really swollen and hurting but I am hoping that a good nights rest will get the swelling down for tomorrows school.

Right now:
5 Days until I am Home!!!
In about half an hour:
4 Days until I am Home!!!

I had a wee accident - long story

Yup, you know knowledge is best gained through experience. I took a wee misstep and my ankle went all kablooey and pain shot through to my knee as well. All in my famous left leg. I happened just after 2 o'clock and I got home around 2:30, because I first had to take care of Accommodation matters. Then I had to walk all the way down to Byres road and it hurt like hell because it is a very steep way down. Took a taxi home (which had this in the window; Cab drivers: proof that practice doesn't make perfect!, which I kind of find funny. I am easily amused). Took Ibuprofen 400 mg and felt fine, so I went to meet my friend Laura, had nice time had coke and carrot cake and then went back home. After that everything went from bad to worse.
Took more painkillers, at seven o'clock. Ordered pizza for me and Dee although I didn't have much appetite. Came back in and tried to put cold on my ankle didn't work, put some inflamatory reduction cream ... didn't work, took 2 tablets of 500 mg Panadol and at 10 o'clock it hadn't started to work. Mom phoned and I told her what had happened, and she basically told me to get my ass to an E.R. to get THE ANKLE checked out (not my ass).
I asked Dee what I should do and he was certain I should have it checked out and offered to phone for a cab. I contacted Árdísi and asked if she was busy and if she wanted to accompany me, Dee couldn't because he was on duty. So we went to the Accident and Emergency thingy at Western Infirmary and that is a new adventure.

We entered the A n' E and was registered there and then told to just sit and wait for my name to be called. Árdís wanted to be sure I would take her in with me when I was called, and I definitely wasn't going to leave her out there alone. There were two police officers at the A n' E and of course it wouldn't be an E.R. if there wasn't a drunk person there as well.
It really felt like stepping into a film studio, I really felt like Mr. Bean coming into a British Hospital, almost like cut from a medical scene some thirty of fourty years before. And not as clean as you would like a hospital to be I must say.
But it is a large city so you must make allowances, there are a lot of things that can go wrong in a city this size.
Well, after waiting for an hour I got to meet a doctor. He stuck his nose out a double door and called three names. So off we went, we were shown to a room where I was asked to sit down, the other two were moved in as well. I was next to the door and then they closed the drapes. The doctor poked my ankle a bit and because I didn't hurt in the places he wanted me to hurt in I had only sprained my ankle and they didn't need to take any x-rays. The doctor basically told me to just keep on with the painkillers and icepacks and also gave me a tubesock and to keep my foot elevated. And that I could then just go. I didn't even need to pay for this, for any of it. Everything free. Cool!!!

We then took a cab home and when we came here we were both so wound up that we just sat down before the television and watched Alien vs. Predator. Ok, movie but rather stupid at times. No more so than any other alien movie though so not too bad.

Well am going to bed now, to keep my foot elevated and no shopping tomorrow. I'll see about Sunday though. If everything else fails I'll just get some crutches, hehehehe.

Right now:
6 Days until I am Home!!!
